John Hajjar, MD, FACS, MBA

Founder, Chairman, and CEO

Dr. John Hajjar is the Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Sovereign Health System. Following graduation from St. John’s University in Queens, NY, Dr. Hajjar earned his medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC, in 1981, and then completed his surgical and urological training at New York University Medical Center in Manhattan.


After conducting research into the genetics of renal cancer following residency, Dr. Hajjar entered the private practice of urology in northern New Jersey in 1987. In 1992, he established one of the first Ambulatory Surgery Centers in New Jersey. That center served as the prototype for the many ambulatory surgical centers in New York, New Jersey, and Florida now operated or under development by Surgem LLC, a management and development company Dr. Hajjar founded in 2005. Dr. Hajjar drew on his experience in driving the trend toward outpatient surgical care in completing an Executive MBA from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

 

Today, Dr. Hajjar devotes all of his professional energies to the growth of Sovereign Health System, a fully integrated community healthcare system providing people in New Jersey and throughout the tri-state area with clinical expertise and state-of-the-art technology at convenient locations.

Glenn A. Gmyrek, MD

Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Glenn A. Gmyrek is a board-certified urologist who serves as Chief Medical Officer. In this capacity, Dr. Gmyrek draws on his deep interest in innovative best practices and evidence-based medicine to enhance patient care.


An active clinician, Dr. Gmyrek sees patients at offices in Fair Lawn and Wayne, NJ, and is affiliated with Hackensack University Medical Center, St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, and The Valley Hospital. His research on topics ranging from the molecular basis of metastatic prostate cancer to surgical techniques for treating endocrine-related conditions has been published in a number of peer-reviewed medical journals.


Dr. Gmyrek is a graduate of Yale University. He received his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and completed his urology residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Orrin Feingold, CFA

Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Feingold is a Chartered Financial Analyst who has led the financial operations of a number of healthcare-related companies. Prior to joining Sovereign Health System in 2015, he was the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer of ComplexCare Solutions, a New York City-based company providing home-based services for people with chronic illnesses. Before joining ComplexCare Solutions in 2013, Mr. Feingold served as Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President of Deluxe Entertainment Services Group, a New York-based provider of services to the entertainment and new media industries. From 2008 to 2010, Mr. Feingold was the Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President of MultiPlan, a preferred provider organization (PPO). He also has served as Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer of MagnaCare, a health-plan management company, and in senior financial leadership roles for a number of other healthcare companies. Mr. Feingold holds a bachelor’s of science degree in economics from the University of Pennsylvania, where he also earned a bachelor’s of arts degree in entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial studies from The Wharton School.

Philip Yachmetz

Chief Legal and Compliance Officer

Mr. Yachmetz comes to Sovereign Health System with diverse experience gained from serving in the top commercial and legal roles at a number of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. Before joining Sovereign in March 2015, he was Co-President, Chief Business Officer and General Counsel of Savient Pharmaceuticals in Bridgewater, NJ. Mr. Yachmetz, who joined Savient in 2004, was the Company’s Executive Vice President and held other senior roles before being appointed Co-President in 2013. He also has served as Vice President and General Counsel for Progenics Pharmaceuticals, Senior Vice President – Business Development and General Counsel for Cyto Therapeutics (now StemCells, Inc.), and Senior Counsel for Hoffman-LaRoche. Mr. Yachmetz received his undergraduate degree from The George Washington University and his law degree from the California Western School of Law. As Sovereign’s top legal and compliance officer, Mr. Yachmetz’ duties include corporate governance and mergers and acquisitions to compliance with all applicable government rules and regulations.

 

Paul Angresano

Vice President, New Business Development, Sovereign Health Medical Group

Mr. Angresano joined Sovereign Health System in March 2014.  He oversees the team responsible for the continued growth of Sovereign Health Medical Group, a division of Sovereign Health System, which focuses on the operation and management of physicians’ care centers.  Mr. Angresano has extensive experience in the medical device industry in which he was the Regional Manager and Territorial Manager for Covidien Vascular Therapies; and the Regional Manager for OsteoMed. Before joining OsteoMed and entering the healthcare industry in 2001, Mr. Angresano was a Captain in the United States Army. He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy, West Point.

Donald Vardaro

Chief Operating Officer, Sovereign Health Cancer Care

Mr. Vardaro is a leader in the healthcare industry with more than 25 years of successful administrative, financial, and clinical experience.  Prior to joining Sovereign Health Cancer Care in December 2010 as the organization’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Vardaro worked for many years as Administrative Director of the Cancer Center at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. He has held a number of senior administrative roles in the radiology and oncology service lines throughout his career. 


As Chief Operating Officer of Sovereign Health Cancer Care, Mr. Vardaro is responsible for the administration, quality and financial improvement of the oncology and radiology service lines. His position is charged with ensuring that high-quality oncology and imaging services are rendered to our patients in accordance with all federal standards, the State of New Jersey, the American College of Radiation Oncology, the American College of Radiology, and the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer. 


Mr. Vardaro is a graduate of Long Island University’s School of Health Professions and holds a Master’s Degree in Administrative Science from Fairleigh Dickenson University.

Kevin Kiel, MBA

Chief Marketing Officer

Mr. Kiel is a healthcare marketing executive with extensive experience in the surgery center, medical device, and hospital arenas. Prior to joining Sovereign Health System in December 2014, he served as Director, Marketing, St. Joseph’s University Imaging. He was the President of Sports Health Network from 2007 to 2012, and before that, served as Executive Vice President of Patient Edu, LLC and as Global Vice-President, Marketing, for SBI/Stryker from 2004 to 2006. Previous positions included sales and marketing roles with Howmedica, Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, and other companies. As Sovereign Health System’s Chief Marketing Officer, Mr. Kiel is responsible for the overall development and implementation of all marketing, advertising, public relations, re-branding, and commercialization of the Sovereign Health System brand. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Finance and an MBA from Seton Hall University.

Maggie Johnson, SPHR, SHRM-SPC

Chief Human Resources Officer

Ms. Johnson joined Sovereign Health System in May 2014. She has more than 25 years of experience in HR leadership that spans healthcare, education, and financial services industries.  She brings expertise in change management; workforce planning for mergers, acquisitions and high growth; and collective bargaining as well as the core HR functions of talent acquisition and retention, talent management, succession planning and leadership development, compensation planning and strategy, benefits design, and employee relations and policies.  


Prior to joining Sovereign, Ms. Johnson was the Vice President, Human Resources for Community Education Centers, Inc., a leading provider of substance abuse treatment programs, healthcare and security services for detention facilities throughout the US and Bermuda.  Ms. Johnson’s earlier executive roles were Senior Vice President, Human Resources for Greater Community Bancorp, a financial holding company for commercial and community banking, insurance services, investment advisory, real estate, and medical equipment leasing companies; Vice President, Human Resources for Heald Colleges, a post-secondary educational institution with more than 17 campuses; and Vice President, Human Resources for SSR Realty Advisors, a MetLife-owned, nationwide institutional investment advisor and asset management company.  Ms. Johnson has also served as a Labor Relations and HR Consultant to clients ranging in size from Fortune 500 to start-ups.  
 
Ms. Johnson earned a law degree (LLB) with honors from the University of London and holds SPHR and SHRM-SPC designations from HRCI and the Society for Human Resource Management, respectively.. 

Moeen Haq, MSc

Chief Technology Officer

Mr. Haq joined Sovereign Health System in July 2014 as Director for Product Development and Information Systems, and was promoted to Chief Technology Officer in 2015. In addition to serving as Chief Technology Officer for Sovereign Health Systems, Mr. Haq is the head executive for MD Vision, a Sovereign Health System research and development subsidiary that specializes in customized software development and IT services. 


With 14 years' experience in healthcare IT, Mr. Haq has particular expertise in electronic medical records and practice-management systems. Before joining Sovereign, he served as Director of Product Development for MD-Online and Intivia InSync (an MD-Online legacy company), as Senior Project Manager for CureMD, and as Information Technology Manager for the Granville Technology Group.


Mr. Haq earned two masters of science degrees -- the first in Computer Communications for Brunel University and the second in Computer Science from Middlesex University. Both institutions are located in London, UK.

 

Chris Dalton

Vice President, Revenue Cycle

Mr. Dalton joined Sovereign Health System in 2012.  Mr. Dalton has extensive experience and expertise in revenue-cycle management.  Prior to joining Sovereign, Mr. Dalton served as Vice President, Accounts Receivable Services for MedAssets for seven years.  Earlier in his career, he was Executive Director of MD-X Solutions; Manager with Besler Consulting; Director with McKesson; and Senior Consultant with Ernst & Young.  He was educated at Long Island University – C.W. Post.
